Fruitvliegjesval / Fruitfly trap

Scroll down for the English version

Benodigdheden:
- lege flessen
- een bodempje wijn per fles
- een scheutje afwasmiddel

Fijne Jacht.

Every winemaker who works with fresh fruit is bothered by the ever present fruitflies.

And I am at this moment in the middle of processing 200 kilo plums. So I was not amazed to see a fruitfly happily flying around my winemaking area.

Now fruitflies are generally nothing but a nuisance, and we need not worry to much about them. Things change when you are making wine. For winemakers fruitflies are not only a nuisance but they are the death of our wine !!!!

Fruit flies really like fresh fruit, and guess who is busy working with fresh fruit ???
The symbiose in this case is that the feared Acetobacter bacterium (the bacterium that transforms wine into vinegar) is spread by the fuitflies. Why ? Well fruitflies have an enormous reproductive drive. In favorable circumstances they can lay about 500 eggs. From these eggs larvae emerge and they need to eat. So fruitflies lay their eggs favorably around rotting or fermenting fruit. And guess with what we winemakers are keeping ourselves busy with: indeed fermenting fruit. Now our yeast makes alcohol and that is where the vinegar bacteria live from, so that is why they hitch a ride from the fruit flies.

So when the fruitfly has a chance to get to our must, there is a chance that the vinegar bacterium gets to our must and the wine will turn into vinegar. So we try to keep the fruit flies away from the must by covering it with a cloth or the lid. Hygene is a primary concern at winemaking !!!

But when the fruitflies are around, they are not easy to get rid off. We therefore have to catch them.

The well-know fly-catching-strip is no solution. Fruit flies are not interested in the goodies which we put on this strip. That is for ordinary street-flies. Fruitflies have taste and class. They are sophisticated and only eat wine related things.

So how to catch them ??
Well with wine of course.

We'll take one or more empty wine-bottles (depending on how much trouble they cause you). Clean them well and pour a bottom of wine in it. Then put a small amount of dish-washing soap in. Don't pour it along the sides, but aim for the middle and have it drop straight into the wine (otherwise they will smell it). Also do not shake the bottle, we do not want any foam !!!

Now put the bottle or bottles startegically at those places were our fruit is and our must is fermenting.

De fruitflies will be attracted by the smell off the wine. They fly into the bottle and re killed by the dish-washing soap. After a while you will see several fruitflies at the bottom of the bottle.

I filtered the contents of such a trap through some kitchen paper, and just look at the result after about a week.

Ingredients for a fruit-fly trap:
- some empty bottles
- a bit of wine for each bottle
- some dish-washing soap.

Happy hunting
